Define Type 4 Hair

The holiday season is upon us and I want to make sure that my type 4 hair sistas have the most poppinest coils in the land. I’ve worn my hair at several lengths since doing the big chop eight years ago- from a super short TWA to a tapered ‘fro. So I’ve become quite the pro at defining my coils. Now I want to help you to do the same. Each of these styling methods will define your type 4 coils at any length.

RAT TAIL COMB

The best way to achieve super defined, tight coils on short type 4 hair is with a Rat Tail Comb. The tail makes it easy to part the hair in sections. While the fine teeth detangles and separates even the tiniest of curls.

3 ROW COMB

My favorite and current go to method to define my type 4 hair is using a Denman 3 Row Styling Comb. This comb makes it easy to detangle, separate and define coils into the perfect sized clumps. It works well on any length, from short to long hair.

DENMAN BRUSH

Similar to the 3 Row Comb, the Denman 7 Row Brush is great for separating and defining type 4 hair. However, it creates slightly smaller clumps since there is less space between the bristles. The brush is best used on medium to long hair that has been detangled first.

THE SHINGLING METHOD

The Shingling Method was my go to method to define my hair before discovering the 3 Row Comb. It gives the same definition as the comb, but requires a little more work since you’re using your hands. However, you have more control over the size and placement of your curls. The Shingling Method works to define type 4 hair at any length, from super short to long.

TWIST OUT

A Twist Out allows you to clump and elongate your coils while giving them definition. It entails twisting your hair into two-strand twists and allowing them to dry. Then pulling each twist apart and separating the strands. You have complete control over how much your hair clumps together. It all depends on the size of the twists and how much you decide to pull them apart. This method is best for medium to long hair.

FINGER COIL OUT

Similar to a Twist Out, a Finger Coil Out involves styling your hair in Finger Coils, then pulling them apart. However, the hair will be a little more defined compared to a Twist Out. This method works best on medium length hair.

PERM ROD SET

Using rollers is the best method for manipulating type 4 hair into a specific curl pattern. Perm rods are a type of rollers used to create spiral curls. The rods are available in a variety of sizes and therefore can be used on different lengths of hair- from short to long. Perm Rod Sets produce different results depending on the size of the perm rods used.
