The Fenty Effect is real y’all. Fenty Beauty came out the gate with 40 shades of foundation last year. Now lots of brands are taking note and following the lead. Even the drugstore brands, evidenced by the new CoverGirl TruBlend Matte Made Foundation. The TruBlend Matte Made Foundation has 40 shades in four categories- Light, Medium, Tan and Deep. I’m going to focus on the 10 deep shades.
Let’s take a look at the packaging first. The foundation comes in a traditional CoverGirl glass bottle with a pump. It’s easy to dispense the perfect amount of product. And the pump locks when not in use which makes the bottle easy to travel with.
Now let’s move on to the shade range. The range of deep shades is just ok. I feel like there could be a few more shades between D10 and D30, D60 and D70, and at least one additional shade between D80 and D90. There’s a decent range of undertones. However there should be more similar shades with different undertones. CoverGirl doesn’t provide undertone info, so I tried to match them for y’all. Undertones can be hard to match from swatches since my own undertones can throw them off. I have warm undertones but can also wear neutrals, especially in the Winter.
D10 Golden Caramel (warm)
D15 Warm Tawny (warm)
D20 True Caramel (olive/warm)
D30 Bronze (cool)
D40 Deep Bronze (cool)
D50 Deep Golden (warm)
D60 Toasted Almond (warm)
D70 Cappuccino (neutral)
D80 Soft Sable (neutral)
D90 Espresso (cool)
D50 Deep Golden is a perfect match for me at the moment. Although I know I’ll need to switch to D70 Cappuccino once I get my Summer tan. The foundation definitely has a matte finish. But doesn’t stay matte for long, especially if you have oily skin. It settles into a dewy finish which is not really a bad thing. Wear will depend on your primer and setting powder. Oily girl’s will need an oil control primer. If your skin is dry, use a moisturizing or smoothing primer. In my experience this foundation is best set with a translucent setting powder. Here I used the Becca Backlight Priming Filter and MUFE HD Setting Powder. CoverGirl released a few primers along with the foundation. But I haven’t had a chance to test them yet.
Overall, the CoverGirl TruBlend Matte Made Foundation has a good formula. But brown skinned beauties will still have a hard time finding a good shade match. Although I appreciate CoverGirl’s efforts of inclusiveness, there’s lots of room for improvement.
The Covergirl TruBlend Matte Made Foundation is available at Amazon and Walgreens $8.49
