The Return of the Denim Jacket + My Personal Style at 34

*Singing & dancing* Go, Go, Go,Go, Go, Go, Go, Go Shawty, it’s your birthday. We gon’ party like it’s your birthday. Yes y’all, it’s my birthday. I am 34 years young today and grateful to have made it to see another birthday. I’m not a spring chicken anymore, but they say you’re as young as you feel, and I’m feeling youthful and fabulous. At 34 I’m completely comfortable in my skin and have a defined personal style. I’ve actually had my personal style figured out for years. But being a blogger can have you confused about your style when you start straying away and trying to keep up with the trends. Those days are done for me though.

I pretty much know what I like. Neutral colors, especially black. Minimal prints. Form flattering silhouettes. Statement blazers and coats. A funky shoe. This is my go to look. I don’t really follow fashion trends unless they fall in line with my personal style. A trend that I’m loving right now is the return of the denim jacket. Although this is not really a trend in my opinion as the denim jacket is a staple in my closet. I’ve had mine since my freshman year in college (16 years). It’s older than my son.

My denim jacket gets better with age. It’s developed rips, tears and distressing in the perfect spots and is now unique to me. I won’t see anyone else with one exactly like mine.

I love to wear my denim jacket with dresses, especially maxi dresses. Lately I’ve been pairing it with bodycon dresses as it tones down the look and makes it slightly more casual and edgy.

Once you have an idea of your personal style, stick with what you like and don’t get too caught up in trends. Add trendy pieces where they fit in, but don’t build your wardrobe around them. Unless you want to end up with a closet full of clothes, but nothing to wear.

Fashion’s not about looking back. It’s always about looking forward.
