I received a bunch of goodies to try from the original Design Essentials Natural Curl Care Collection, along with products from the new Natural Coconut & Monoi lines. I decided to try the original line first and did one of my go to styles, a Twist Out.
The Design Essentials Natural Curl Care Collection is formulated without sulfates, parabens, phthalates, petroleum, DEA and TEA, which are all very harsh on the hair. I was sent over the Natural Twist & Set Lotion, Natural Curl Enhancing Mousse, Natural Daily Moisturizing Lotion and I received the Natural Honey Shea Edge Tamer in my bag from Texture on the Runway.
Natural Twist & Set Lotion – a quick drying setting lotion suitable for curly to tightly coiled natural textures. It moisturizes & easily detangles resulting in shiny, defined curls with a lasting medium hold and luminous shine.
Natural Curl Enhancing Mousse – perfect for creating “Wash & Wear” styles on loose wavy to tightly curled natural textures. It’s infused with Olive Oil and Vitamin B Complex to nourish the hair while providing added moisture and shine. The lightweight formula dries quickly, defines curls and reduces frizz while giving hair a gorgeous, natural sheen.
Natural Daily Moisturizing Lotion – designed to moisturize and revitalize dry curls and waves while controlling frizz in one easy step. The moisture rich formula includes wheat protein, olive, aloe vera, cocoa and jojoba to nourish, hydrate and replenish.
Natural Honey Shea Edge Tamer – a moisturizing, firmer-hold edge control gel designed for curly to coily hair that securely lays down the hairline. Honey and Shea Butter adds nourishment and brilliant shine.
I was told that the Twist & Set Lotion and the Curl Enhancing Mousse is the perfect product combo for a bomb twist out on 4c hair. So I washed and deep conditioned my hair, and generously applied the Twist & Set Lotion. My coils immediately begin to pop and my hair felt so silky and was easy to comb through. Next I applied the Curl Enhancing Mousse and proceeded to put medium sized twists in my hair, and finger shingled the sides and back. The products felt very light on my hair, almost like I didn’t apply anything at all. I allowed my hair to air dry overnight. In the morning, I rubbed a generous amount of the Daily Moisturizing Lotion in my palms to apply to my hair while taking my twists apart. This provides added moisture and keeps hair from getting frizzy. After I separated my twists to desired fullness, I lifted my roots with a pick and smoothed my edges with the Honey Shea Edge Tamer.
The result was a fluffy twist out that let my natural texture shine through. My hair felt super silky and moisturized, not crispy or crunchy at all. I did notice a little flaking but I used the products very generously, so I don’t know if I used too much or if the products naturally tend to flake. The Honey Shea Edge Tamer laid my edges to the gawds, but unfortunately the hold was short lived. To make it last longer I layered a bit of Gorilla Snot Gel on top. Overall, I was impressed with the results and the style looked good for at least a week, so I have no complaints. I’m sure this combo will work great for a perm rod set and will be trying that soon.
The Design Essentials Natural Curl Care Collection is available at Sally Beauty and Target. I’ll have a review of the Design Essentials Natural Coconut & Monoi line for you guys soon.

I love this product soooo much! My routine is the shampoo and conditioner. Then loc method with their leavin-in, black castor oil and daily moisturizer. Then I scrunch my hair outward with the curl enhancing mousse!
