ColourPop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipsticks Review

I have a love hate relationship with these ColourPop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipsticks. Read on to see why.

ColourPop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipsticks in Trap, Mars, Succulent

Liquid lipsticks that dry down to a matte finish have been all the rave lately and for the most part I really like them. I’ve been attempting to test at least one shade each for review from the many different brands on the market, so I was super hype when my cousin gifted these to me a few weeks ago as they were on my radar. The ColourPop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipsticks are lightweight, super-pigmented lipsticks that apply like a wet gloss and dry down to an ultra matte, kiss proof finish. I have a love hate relationship with these as they are DIFFICULT to work with.

With matte lipsticks it is important to exfoliate your lips prior to application as the formula is unforgiving to dryness, but I really stress it with these. Hell the formula is not forgiving to smooth lips either. It’s very dry. I mean extremely dry and as soon as it dries down it makes my lips feel like I’ve been laying in the desert without water for days. No exaggeration, it’s dry… even with a lip balm underneath!

I absolutely love the colors though and they are true to tube. The doe foot wand makes application easy and precise.

Now when you look at the swatches what you see is exactly what you get when you apply the lipsticks on your lips. I’ll go into detail one by one as the formula for each is kind of inconsistent.

ColourPop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipsticks in Trap Dark Skin

Trap is a greyed out beige (greige) and it’s absolutely gorgeous. It’s that type of nude that can be pulled off by a variety of complexions and skintones. It’s an “out there” type of shade but can be toned down a little with a complimentary lip liner. Trap applies smooth, even and opaque in one coat and although it feels dry it doesn’t look dry. It wears for hours unless you eat something oily and then you’ll have to remove and reapply. Yeah you can’t touch these up, they don’t work that way.

ColourPop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipsticks in Mars Dark Skin

Mars is a bright fuchsia red and is also gorgeous. You have to apply a very thin coat and be sure to apply it evenly the first time around as you can not layer it. I repeat, you can not layer it. If you attempt to layer it will flake and look crusty, and you’ll have to take it all off and start all over. It’s dry and it looks dry, it gives the lips a wrinkly appearance. If applied like suggested it will wear for hours albeit uncomfortably, until you eat something oily and you’ll need to remove it and reapply.

ColourPop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipsticks in Succulent Dark Skin

Succulent is an electric neon orange red and OMG I love this shade, y’all should know that this is my favorite color family when it comes down to lipsticks. But Succulent sucks. Even more so then Mars. It applies very patchy and uneven and you have to be careful to apply a thin and even layer… but even when you do it still flakes. Yes, it flakes off leaving your lips looking crusty with uneven color. It’s so bad that it needs to be removed and reapplied like every three hours which is totally unacceptable with this type of formula since it’s hard to remove without an oil based remover. My lips feel like they’ve been through trauma after wearing this shade. I don’t know if I got a bad batch but this is the worst formula of the three.

Out of all of the liquid lipsticks that I’ve tried so far the ColourPop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipsticks are my least favorite. They look and feel extremely dry and the flaking is unacceptable. The only one that doesn’t have any issues (except for feeling dry) is Trap, and I’d highly suggest it as it’s gorgeous. As for Mars and Succulent, if you have similar colors I’d pass.

  1. That’s too bad because all three shades look gorgeous on you! I had high hopes for these. I ordered Zipper Wednesday; just to try it out but it sounds like that might end up being my only one.

  2. I purchased Tulle and Limbo and LOVE them! I heard that the lighter colors are the most problematic but if you stick to the darker colors you will be fine. Thank goodness I wasn’t interested in the lighter colors.

  3. Love your blog! Just started looking through, but I agree darker colors are better but the formula is drying. I would say the best of all I have tried are Tulle, zipper, and avenue. Lax is pretty but patchy as well.
