I know that Spring has just sprung, but Summer will be here before you know it. I love protective hairstyles for Summer. When it comes time to partake in all of the outdoor fun including barbecues and vacations you want to be able to get up and go without having to fuss over your hair. Here are a few protective hairstyles that will work for all hair types.
Box Braids
Keri Hilson
I absolutely love me some box braids and it’s my personal favorite when it comes down to protective hairstyles. They’re versatile, there are so many options when it comes down to size and length and you can create many different styles from ponytails to buns and pinups.
Twists
Jaleesa Jaikaran
Whether you choose Senegalese, Havana, Marley or Kinky, twists is another versatile protective hairstyle. Like box braids, you can choose between different lengths and sizes but twists can look a little more elegant for work or formal outings.
Faux Locs
MeLifestyle
Faux Locs is a style that I would really like to try and I am hoping that my hair is long enough this Summer to give them a spin. They are perfect for vacation and will look super sexy when you’re laid out on the beach in that cute swimsuit. See MeLifestyle’s tutorial here.
Cornrows
Ciara
Cornrows used to be one of my favorite styles when I was younger and I think I may revisit them this Summer. There are so many styles to choose from, from the Bo Derek to Goddess Braids. These jumbo straight backs are perfect for when you’re just chilling on the weekends.
Crochet Braids
The Chic Natural
Crochet braids look super natural when done right and they are a great alternative to sew in weaves as it’s less stress on your natural hair. You can use marley hair and perm rods to create different sized curls or buy pre-curled hair for different curl patterns. You can even add a bang. See TheChicNatural’s tutorial here.

You can see a lot of the products that I use in this post https://www.theglamorousgleam.com/2015/02/products-im-using-on-my-natural-hair.html.
I’ve since added a few more staples… Alikay Naturals Lemongrass Leave In Spray, Giovanni Direct Moisture Leave In and Jamaican Black Castor Oil. I’ll be doing a post on these soon.
Alikay Naturals Lemongrass leave-in is hands down once of the best liquid leave in I’ve used! Coming second behind Biolage Matrix Keratinodose!
I’m going to have to try that Biolage one!

I’ve yet to try Crochet braids (on my to try list this summer) but I LOVE me some Senagaleese twist. It has chic appeal and the take down is SUPER quick and easy!
