I’m always game for trying a new primer, especially an inexpensive one that claims to keep oil in check. I have combination skin with a very oily t-zone so it is very important that a primer controls oil and shine for the better part of the day. New from Sleek MakeUp, Control Shine & Prime Oil-free Mattifying Primer is a silicone based primer formulated to create a smooth base for makeup application, extend the wear of foundation and control oil for an all day matte finish. It can be used before applying makeup or alone to control excess oil and smooth complexion.
The primer comes in a very small squeeze tube that makes it easy to get out what you need. It is a little on the thick side, similar in consistency to L’oreal Magic Perfecting Base, but it applies smooth and even. Although it looks like it is more suited for fair complexions it is invisible once blended into the skin. All you need is a tiny amount as if you apply too much you can feel it sitting on the skin. Foundation applies smooth and blends easily over the primer.
I’ve been testing out Control Shine & Prime for the past few days with different foundations to give it a fair trial and sadly I’m not a fan. It doesn’t do a good job at controlling the oil in my t-zone at all. After a few hours my nose is visibly shiny and oily, and I have to blot away the excess oil. On top of that my foundation in the oily areas appears to be fading leaving my nose looking patchy, and the rest of my face looks as if the foundation is sitting on top of my skin and not blended in. By the time I get home about 12 hours later my face looks a hot mess. If you have dry skin this primer may be a good fit but oily girls beware, this one ain’t for you!
