Black Up Cosmetics is a high-end brand based in Paris that primarily caters to women of color. Their products are extremely pigmented making them perfect for our skin. The brand used to be available here in the US in Macy’s but disappeared long ago. I am not sure of what happen but Black Up products are now available to us again via their online website.
Orange Red is my favorite shade of lipstick. I had my eye on Black Up Rouge à Lèvres Mat Lipstick in 34M but thought that it looked just like all of the other lipsticks that I own in this shade family so I forgot about it. Imagine my excitement when my cousin gifted it to me as it was too bright for her so she knew I’d love it, and she was right. I rocked it this weekend and fell in love.
Black Up Rouge à Lèvres Mat Lipstick in 34M is a bright tomato red matte. It applies smooth and creamy with highly pigmented coverage but it has to be layered a bit for full opacity. It doesn’t feel as dry as mattes can feel, however it is not forgiving to dry flaky lips so you must exfoliate well and apply a moisturizing base before application. The formula feels very comfortable on and it wears well for hours, even through a meal and doesn’t leave a stain behind. I pulled out all of my lipsticks in this color family including MAC Lady Danger, Wet ‘nWild Purty Persimmon and Sleek MakeUp OMG to see if any were dupes. Take a look…
Black Up 34M, MAC Lady Danger, W ‘n W Purty Persimmon, Sleek OMG
The closest dupe is MAC Lady Danger. Both are matte and almost the same exact shade except Black Up 34M leans a tinge more orange, but it is not a very noticeable difference. Both Purty Persimmon and OMG lean slightly more red but both are reasonable substitutes to achieve the look. They are close enough that you don’t need to own them all. I definitely don’t need anymore lipsticks in this color family. I’m set!
So far I have this lipstick and a lip lacquer (review coming soon) from Black Up and I am really impressed with the products. I definitely plan to try more from the brand, especially the foundations.
