I love the versatility of box braids. There are just so many different ways to style them, be creative and the options are endless. Last time that I had my braids I mostly wore them down or in a bun but I’ve been trying a few new styles this time around and loving them. I figured I’d share with you guys before I take my braids out which will be ASAP (meaning hopefully this weekend.) Sorry I wasn’t able to film a tutorial as I’ve been so busy but maybe I’ll be able to do it before I take them out, I’m not making any promises though as with my schedule this week it looks unlikely. Here’s 5 Ways to Style Your Box Braids…

1. The Top Knot Bun

The top knot bun is simple, sexy and classy all at the same time. It will compliment any outfit from casual to formal and it’s super easy to do. My boyfriend doesn’t like my bun and says that it makes me look stuffy and too formal but I love it. Men have no clue lol. To do my bun I turn my head upside down to gather the braids into a high ponytail and then I separate it into two and twist it halfway down the length, and then loop the rest of the ends around the base of the pony and pin. Sounds confusing but it’s so easy. You can get a visual of how I do my topknot here in this Get Ready With Me video.

2. French Braid Updo

I tried this style for the first time this past weekend and I loved it. It’s the perfect updo if you need to go to a formal event but also works for church and work. I wouldn’t really wear this look with casual wear though as it looks out of place in my opinion. If you know how to french braid, and french braid your own hair this will be easy… Turn your head upside down and starting from the nape of your neck, french braid your hair all the way to the front of your head and down the length of your braids. Swoop the braid over your forehead in whichever direction you please (I swoop to the right) and pin it to the side of the french braid. Then loop the rest of the braided length over the french braid, tuck under and pin.

3. Reverse French Braid Updo

This is almost the same exact style as above but instead of swooping the braid to the side I roll it back and pin it into a Janelle Monae-ish hump. This way it works better with casual wear, one little improvisation changes the entire look.

4. Braided Half Crown

Here I french braid my braids from ear to ear leaving the back down, and simply loop the braid over and pin the rest of the length to the french braid. You can also loop the length of the braid around your head like a crown and pin the ends for an alternate version of this style, I’ll update with a pic if I do it this week.

5. Let It All Hang Out

The simplest and easiest style of all just wear your braids out. Make sure you have multiple part options if you like to switch it up. Funny my boyfriend likes my hair best this way…. I guess because it’s so simple. Beats me, that’s men for ya!

Which style is your favorite?

  1. Great job with each of these. Haven’t seen anyone rock them as versatile as you styled them. Super cute. And, yes, men have no clue! Though we gotta give them credit for at least being smart enough to recognize some of our beauty & style 🙂

  2. Beautiful job! I’m thinking of getting braids for the summer and these would be great ways to style them! Thanks for sharing.
