After a visit to the new Dinosaur BBQ in Park Slope this Summer (review coming soon) and tasting Fried Green Tomatoes for the first time, I was so hooked that I had to try and make them home. During a Saturday morning run I spotted some pretty, juicy looking green tomatoes at the Farmers’ Market and hurriedly purchased a few with Fried Green Tomatoes in mind. I whipped up a batch that night and they were perfection! Crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. These are perfect to serve for game day or to enjoy as weekend comfort food.
What you will need…
vegetable oil (for frying)
green tomatoes
kosher salt
black pepper
milk
egg white
garlic powder
cayenne pepper
paprika
flour
corn meal
bread crumbs
milk
shredded mozzarella
sauce for dipping
Preparation…
Sorry, I do not have exact measurements as I free-styled this one. Whip your egg white with your milk in a shallow dish and set aside. Wash and slice your tomatoes, pat dry and season with salt and pepper.
On a baking sheet, place a pile of flour (about one cup), season with the garlic powder and mix thoroughly. Next to it make a pile of corn meal, add the bread crumbs, cayenne pepper and paprika and mix this thoroughly as well. Heat the vegetable oil. Coat the tomatoes with the flour mixture, then with the egg mixture and then coat with the cornmeal mixture.
Fry for a few minutes until it gets brown and crispy, flip and fry the other side. Let drain on paper towels.
Sprinkle with the shredded mozzarella while still hot and serve with tomato sauce of your choice. I used three cheese, yum!
Simple, easy and delicious. Enjoy!
