I’ve seen good reviews for the Dermalogica brand but have never tried their products due to the hefty price tag. I was glad to find a few items in my bag from TMS NYC Blogger Preview to try out for review. One of the products that I received is Dermalogica Precleanse, which is a deep cleansing oil. Now I’ve been using MAC Cleanse Off Oil for the last four years to remove my makeup before using my regular cleanser and I love it, but I’ve never tried any other oil cleansers to compare so I was glad to get the chance. How does the Dermalogica Precleanse perform compared to my beloved MAC Cleanse Off Oil? Read on to find out.
Dermalogica Precleanse is a deep-cleansing oil that dissolves makeup and impurities from the skin including excess oil, sunscreen and environmental pollutants. It is is fortified with Olive, Kukui and Apricot oils as well as Rice Bran and Vitamin E Oil to condition skin and cleanse without clogging pores. It does not contain any artificial colors or fragrance. It is gentle enough to be used around the eyes making it great for removing waterproof eye makeup. The oil is housed in a simple flip cap container making it a little difficult to disperse as you can easily pour out too much. It’s also not great for travel. A pump would have been better.
The oil is very light with a herbal scent that’s a little strong but not overwhelming. A small amount in the palm of your hand will remove everything including heavy makeup. To use you simply pour some into dry hands and massage the oil into the skin to dissolve makeup and dirt. I usually use my fingertips to apply a concentrated amount to my eye makeup and lipstick then rub the remainder over the rest of my face and massage in. You then wet your hands and continue to massage, this will cause the oil to emulsify…
To remove you rinse with lukewarm water and then follow up with a Dermalogica Cleanser or cleanser of your choice and that’s it. The oil removes absolutely everything and leaves the skin feeling squeaky clean but not dry. You can even get away without using an additional cleanser but I always follow up with my regular cleanser used with my Clarisonic Mia. I really like this cleansing oil as it removes everything without stripping my skin leaving it soft and glowing. I’ve been using it for a weeks and have not experienced any irritation or breakouts.
So how does Dermalogica Precleanse compare to MAC Cleanse Off Oil? They work exactly the same. Both remove all traces of my makeup even heavy and waterproof makeup while being gentle on my skin. Both have a great ingredient list with essential oils and skin nourishing ingredients. However Dermalogica Precleanse costs substantially more than MAC Cleanse Off Oil for just about the same amount. Precleanse is $37 for 5.1 ozs while Cleanse Off Oil is $28 for 5 ozs. I am also a MAC Pro which gives me a 40% discount. So although I like Dermalogica Precleanse a lot, when I am done with my bottle I will not purchase and will stick with my MAC Cleanse Off Oil as it works just as well and is more cost efficient. That’s a no brainer.
