For the last eight years or so I’ve been using different types of lye relaxers including Regular, Salon Herbals and Oil Moisturizer Motions, and Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil. Although my hair relaxes well and is straight and silky, I am starting to notice a pattern. No matter how much I take good care of my hair, every few months I will experience unexplained shedding, and after a few weeks I would find a small mysterious spot somewhere in my head… where the hair has broken off down to the new growth. Back when I was in high school and the early years of college when I kept my hair long and used box or no-lye relaxers I never experienced this. I switched to lye because it is said that although no-lye relaxers are better for your scalp, lye relaxers are better for your hair. Still, lye relaxers are very harsh on the scalp and I believe that the continued use of them has made my scalp extra sensitive and dry, causing damage to my hair in the long run. So I decided to kick the lye and go back to no-lye relaxers. After doing a bit of research, I decided to try the Mizani Butter Blend Sensitive Scalp Rhelaxer for Medium/Normal hair.
Mizani Butter Blend Sensitive Scalp Rhelaxer is a Calcium Hydroxide (no-lye) formula relaxer with Arginine, a fortifying amino acid and a signature blend of shea butter, cocoa butter and honey to add moisturizing emollients to the hair to protect it from the harsh chemicals. It also contains Polyquaternium-16 for superior conditioning, lubricity and a soft silky feel. Since this is a no-lye relaxer it requires mixing to activate, hence the two part kit.
After mixing the parts together, the relaxer truly looked like whipped butter and the sweetness of the shea and cocoa butters cut down the harsh smell a bit. I based my scalp with a sensitive scalp creme and parting my hair in small sections, applied the Butter Blend to my new growth. I paid close attention to the time and after applying and smoothing for 18 minutes (with absolutely no burning or tingling at all!), I washed it out with a color coded neutralizing shampoo. I then gave myself a Ginseng & Tea Tree Hot Oil Treatment. After rinsing out the hot oil treatment, I applied Jazzing semi-permanent hair color in Bluest-Black for 15 minutes with heat and let it sit for 15 more minutes without. I washed out the Jazzing with Tea Tree Shampoo and applied IC leave-in treatment with aloe vera to my scalp, Chi Silk Infusion on my ends and wet set my hair with motions setting lotion. I sat under the dryer for about 30 minutes until my hair was dry to the touch, and tied up my hair and went to sleep. In the morning I applied a dime size amount of Hana Shine shield to my hair before combing it out, combed it out with a large tooth comb and styled it. Here were my results…
My hair came out super straight, shiny and silky! This will now be my go to relaxer for as long as I continue to get the desired results. I paid $11.99 at my local beauty supply store, but you can purchase the single application kit for $10.77 or the four application kit for $30.50 on Amazon. I will be purchasing the four application kit myself. Mizani also makes other products to use together as a system with this relaxer but I chose to use my own products that I am used to. Great results. I would not be able to do it myself.
Thanks girlie. I’ve been relaxing my own hair for the most part since I was 12 years old, so I am kind of a pro at it now 🙂
This is the relaxer that my stylist uses on me. I love the results! Glad you liked it!
My recent post 1in of new growth!
Thanks girl and I love it!
WOw, you did a great job; it looks professional! I could never relax my own hair, but this relaxer seems perfect especially with the "no-burning', it seems like a god-send!
Although I think I'm gonna take a break from relaxing, I may try texturizing my hair just a bit to see wat happens and let my curls loosen up a bit for the holidays and new year.
xoxo ♥
My recent post FOTD- Peach Is Fall
Thanks girl. A texturizer seems like a good idea but you have beautiful curls without it! 🙂
HI
I usually use the butter blend regular and have had great results with it. The last time I relaxed I did not have access to the butter blend regular and used the sensitive. It burned my scalp and broke areas of my shoulder length to a half an inch. I dont think it will ever be the one for me again. But yours look great!
So sorry that happened to you. I haven’t used this relaxer for a while and have been using my ORS Olive Oil. Was going to switch back but now I’m having second thoughts.
Yes that’s true it broke my hair a little with the sensitive scalp one as we’ll.. I’m use to using the other one but they didn’t have it at the time so I got the sensitive one..
Would you recommend mizani bb mild for a 12 year old?
I’d say stick to a kiddie relaxer
Just have to weigh-in: there’s no such thing as a “kiddie relaxer”. It’s the same chemicals, and even the same strength. Just pure marketing 🙁
I’ve heard this and I’m not sure how true it is. However in my early teens regular strength relaxers messed my hair pretty bad. I was able to use just for me without the damage and nurse my hair back to health. As soon as we went back to “adult” relaxers my hair started to get damaged again because it was too strong and yes it was no lye. So there is some kind of difference at least in my experience. I heard that kiddie perms are formulated to process slower so maybe that’s the case
Just yesterday my hair dresser” used the sensitive on my hair. I was wondering how I was not getting burns… Then she told me. Today so far I am happy.

Well I’m in south Africa don’t know where I’d get it but I guess I’d have to check online. I have a big afro very coily, relaxers just burned burned till I decided to stop. But now I’m tired of the afro and weave. Thanks for the post I hope I’ll have a good experience just as you have, I haven’t used a relaxer in five years I wonder how my skin will react. Thanks
Hey, you can find mizani in certain salons in SA I know for sure there’s a Mizani salon called the L’Oréal Proffessional institute in Joburg,Braamfontein, so do check it out even online theye do relaxers, treatments etc,
can you use another activator with the Miz bb sensitive scalp relaxer? it wasn’t in the box?? and what activator would you recommend if so?
You need to use the activator made specifically for the relaxer you are using.
