Revlon Colorstay Liquid Eye Pen Review

In a recent drugstore haul, I purchased the Revlon Colorstay Liquid Eye Pen in “Blackest Black”. Overall I am pretty impressed. Before I begin this review, let me just state that I have not used liquid eyeliner for a few years so I can not compare this to any other brand of liquid eyeliner. This review is based solely on performance.

What it claims…
  • No-mess liquid eyeliner creates a precise line from soft to dramatic
  • Felt tip controlled application
  • Smudge-proof lasting color that wears up to 16 hours
  • Easier to apply than traditional liquid eyeliners
First line using the pen directly on it’s point.
Second line using the pen at an angle.

I woke up late the other morning and had to make it a no eyeshadow, just liner and mascara day. So I decided to try out this pen. I used Urban Decay Primer Potionas a base. I have oily lids so I do this with any liner, or eye look for that matter to ensure that my makeup doesn’t slide off. The pen was a bit easier for me to apply than pencil liner since it glides on so smoothly, however I was a bit shaky so I had to use my trusty concealer and a concealer brush to fix mistakes. Excuse my less than perfect application as I am rusty with liquid liner and have to get used to using it again. The pen is only on my upper lash line. You should not put liquid liner on your waterline as it will burn like all hell! lol. I used Avon Glimmersticks in “Blackest Black” on my waterline. Anyway, I took these pictures at 7:30 am while the liner was still fresh…

I was out all day. Went to work and ran my daily errands. The next picture I took at 8:30 pm after I arrived back home and settled in…
After 13 hours, the Revlon Colorstay Liquid Eye Pen pretty much looks the same as when I first applied it. Even with my oily lids. I say that’s pretty impressive!
I swatched the Revlon Color Stay next to a few of my Black Pencil Liners (no base)…
From top to bottom:
1st & 2nd-Revlon Colorstay Liquid Eye Pen in “Blackest Black”
3rd- Avon Glimmersticks in “Blackest Black”
4th-NYX eye pencil in “Black”
After 1 hour, I washed my hands with liquid soap and water…
As you can see, the Revlon Colorstay clearly could not hold up against the soap and water. The Avon Glimmersticks held up the best. Since this is not a waterproof eyeliner, the only thing that this test proved is that this liner should not be too hard to remove with eye makeup remover. MAC Cleanse Off Oil removed all traces of this liner from my eyes.
  • precise
  • long lasting without fading
  • easy to apply
  • easy to remove
  • inexpensive

  • I had to go over my line a few times to intensify the color, not intense enough with one stroke
  • Not waterproof

Overall I would give this liner a 4/5 for performance. It did a very good job of holding up to my oily lids. I did not give this liner a perfect score as I have no other liquid eyeliner to compare it to… yet. I plan to try other liquid liners to see which ones I like best. Do you have any suggestions?

When I’m not hunting down the latest and greatest beauty products, beating a face or lacing a do, you can find me roaming the streets of NYC in my stilettos looking for the next best restaurant. Or in the kitchen trying to outdo myself from the last time.
