MAC Cosmetics x Ulta Beauty Coming This Spring

MAC Cosmetics x Ulta BeautySay what now? Yes, you read that right. MAC Cosmetics x Ulta Beauty is coming this Spring. And no it’s not a collaboration collection. According to WWD, MAC is going to be sold at Ulta Beauty online and in stores in an attempt to boost slowing US sales. Launching online in May, and then in a fraction of Ulta Beauty stores by mid-June. The product selection will be limited to about 45% of MAC’s lineup, and centered around foundation and lip color. Including the Studio Fix Fluid and Powder, Studio Waterweight and Prolongwear Nourishing Waterproof foundations. As well as the Next to Nothing foundation that launches next month. The lippie lineup will include lipsticks, lipgloss, Liptensity and Retromattes. There will also be a “Little MAC” assortment.

MAC Cosmetics fell off the throne a long time ago due to so much new competition from the drugstore arena. The drugstore brands stepped their game up with similar quality products at a cheaper price point. Especially on the lipstick forefront. Yet I can’t front, I didn’t see this coming. I wonder if the brand will start closing more retail stores. We already lost the Downtown Brooklyn store. Although we did gain a kiosk in Atlantic Center.

What are your thoughts on MAC Cosmetics x Ulta Beauty?

  1. This is so interesting but not all too surprising. When they lowered the price of their eyeshadows that was very telling. MAC was the first brand that I knew of that got it right for WOC in terms of foundations, and it is still my reference point I guess. I live in a country where we only just got a MAC store about 18months ago and it is sold at a higher price, so I only go in there to browse…but I digress…..Also in my part of the world we still have little choice in terms of the other brands on MAC’s level so we are kind of limited to MAC. I wonder if there is anything they can do to remain on top of it. Their lipsticks are still quite good but as you say SOOO MUCH COMPETITION, for soooo much CHEAPER. Oh well, hopefully this works out for them.

    • You are so right. For many women of color, MAC was one of our first “prestige” brands, ad so many still use MAC foundations as a reference. Especially when trying to color match with another foundation. On another note, the prices of those eyeshadows had to come down. They were extremely pricey for what they are. When these days you can find an entire eyeshadow palette at the drugstore, with great pigmentation and staying power, for less than the price of one MAC eyeshadow. In the WWD article it says that MAC is evaluating price points. So we may see some more price decreases, as well as more “Little MAC” options for smaller quantities at a lower price (like the tiny pigments.) I only shop at MAC now for a few staple items and lipsticks, and only because I have a Pro Discount.
