I had a few NYX eyeshadow trios and a five pan palette, so I decided to depot them into an empty 15 pan MAC palette. I used two different heat methods, the Candle Method and the Flat Iron Method. This required the use of sharp objects and fire so be very careful if you decide to try this. Do this at your own risk. I am not responsible for any accidents. Be sure to do this in a well ventilated area as the fumes from the burning plastic are very strong. Also, be very careful as NYX eyeshadows are very soft and break easily. I chipped a few of mine in the process, but no major damage.
Candle Method
Using the sharp tip of a knife, remove the trio from the palette. I noticed some trios come out from the top, some from the bottom. The Lake Moss trio came out from the bottom, but I was able to remove the I Dream of St. Lucia 5 pan palette from the top.
Hold the palette directly over the flame for about 30 seconds to melt the plastic under the shadow. The plastic should be soft enough so that you can push the shadow out. Do this one shadow at a time.
When the candle melts a dent into the plastic under the shadow, use the knife to push it out. Then use the knife to pull the shadow out the rest of the way, as shown above. Once the shadow is out, place it face down on a paper towel.
I cut an old American Express magnet into pieces to hold the pans in the palette, as they are not magnetic. I used colorful labels over the magnet so that I may keep track of the eyeshadows names. The hole puncher is crossed out because I tried to use it to make the magnets, unfortunately they were too small and useless.
Place the pans into the empty palette.
Flat Iron Method
The only difference in the Flat Iron Method is that I put wax paper on the flat iron, put the shadows on top and let them sit for about 5 minutes until they were hot enough to push out. This method was a bit easier and there were less fumes. I must also add that it is a bit safer as it does not require the use of open flames. *don’t leave the shadows on for too long though*
Finished Palette
I also use these methods to depot my MAC eyeshadows. Let me know if you have any questions.
